Police believe a man charged over the death of Indian boy Gurshan Singh Channa ran out of petrol while driving with the toddler in his boot and was picked up by a woman driver.
Police want to speak with a woman motorist they believe stopped to help Gursewak Dhillon between 12pm and 3pm (AEDT) on Thursday, the day the toddler went missing.
They believe she drove Dhillon, who had been driving a dark green VT or VN Commodore, from a point in Melbourne's northern suburbs to a service station.
Dhillon, 23, appeared briefly in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday on one charge of manslaughter by criminal negligence.
Police allege Dhillon, who shared the home with Gurshan's parents and others, placed the three-year-old boy unconscious but alive in the boot of his car, drove for at least three hours and dumped him at Oaklands Junction without checking to see if he was alive or dead.
There was no evidence given as to how the boy became unconscious.
Gurshan's body was found by a council worker in grass by the side of a road about 7pm on Thursday, some 20km from his family's home in Lalor.
An autopsy has not revealed the cause of death and police are still awaiting the results of toxicology tests.
It is believed the boy's parents were planning to return to India with Gurshan's body on Saturday.
But they are enduring an anxious wait after a Coroner's Court spokeswoman said his body was still under investigation and it was not known when it would be released to his family.
Dhillon is due to appear again in court on June 29.
