An Indian national will face a Melbourne court charged over the
death of three-year-old Gurshan Singh last week.
Gursewak Dhillon, 23, faced an out-of-sessions court hearing before
a bail justice on Sunday evening charged with manslaughter by
criminal negligence.
He was remanded in custody to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates'
Court on Tuesday.
The toddler's body was found at Oaklands Junction, near Melbourne
Airport, about six hours after he disappeared from his Lalor home,
about 20km away.
Police allege Dhillon, who shared the home with Gurshan's parents
and others, placed the boy unconscious but alive in the boot of his
car, drove around for at least three hours and then dumped him at
Oaklands Junction without checking to see if he was dead or
alive.
An autopsy has not revealed the cause of death, and police have
given no information on how Gurshan came to be unconscious.
The court case comes after Gurshan's mother, Harpreet Kaur Channa,
wrote of her anguish in a letter to the Herald Sun newspaper.
"Our son was a beautiful boy and he was very loved and he is still
in the front of our eyes," the letter said.
"Up to this point our grief has been so bad, so deep, so beyond
explanation.
"We want to thank the Australian people for their support and the
Victoria Police for (making an arrest) so fast."
