A 92-year-old grandmother accused of murdering her husband could be released from jail and transferred to a Sydney hospital, a court has heard.

Clara Tang has been charged with the murder of her 98-year-old husband Ching Yung Tang, who was found dead in the couple's Surry Hills apartment last Friday.

Tang will remain in custody until she undergoes a forensic psychiatric assessment, her lawyer John Davidson says.

Davidson told the court his client would be accepted at St Vincent's Hospital in Darlinghurst in a locked ward provided the report found there were no safety issues.

Medical documents, including one by a doctor of geriatric medicine at St Vincent's, were tendered to the court.

Davidson says Tang was in a very poor and confused state and he was aiming to have her released from custody as soon as possible.

"She is downstairs (in the cells) today and she doesn't speak English, adding to her discomfort," he says.

A Cantonese interpreter had been requested for her formal bail application, which was expected to take place at the same court, unless the report was completed sooner.

Crown prosecutor Karl Prince says bail would not be opposed on the basis of the report being completed.

Tang's granddaughter did not wish to comment outside court.
