The 1978 final saw two-time champion Chris Evert come up against the 21-year-old Martina Navratilova.

It was a classic contrast in styles with Evert the obdurate baseliner against the aggressive serve and volley of the Czech-born Navratilova.

The decider was also the start of the wonderful rivalry as the duo would face off in four subsequent Wimbledon finals.

Evert was dynamite under pressure, indeed she was nicknamed the 'Ice lady' and many compared her to Swede Bjorn Borg in this way.

The glamourous Lloyd took the first set 6-2 and everything was going to plan.

Fight back

But Navratilova fought back to take the second set 6-4 and the match to a decider.

Evert wilted as Navratilova continue to attack the net and all too soon the young left hander was serving for the match.

In this exclusive video she recalls her heart beating so fast she thought it was going to come through her chest.

Overcoming the attack of nerves Navratilova claimed championship point and started an amazing reign.

She would go on to win a record nine Wimbledon championships across three decades - a feat that will likely never be matched, let alone surpassed.
