About the show
Wild at Heart is the story of an English family moving to the
South African bush to set up and run a game reserve - and more
importantly, to sort out the problems within the family
itself.
When the series begins, Danny Trevanion (a widower and vet in his
early 40s) is living in England with his eighteen-year-old daughter
Rosie, Sarah (his wife of six months) and Sarah's two children from
her previous marriage, eight-year-old Olivia and 13-year-old
Evan.
Tensions in the family are running high, with Rosie bitterly
resentful that her father has remarried and Evan so out of control
that he takes a tranquiliser gun into school to threaten the boys
who are bullying him.
When Danny brings home a monkey whose life he saved after it was
smuggled illegally into the country, Sarah decides that the family
should travel together to Africa to return the monkey to its
natural habitat - hoping that they'll finally bond as a family unit
along the way.
It's intended just to be a holiday, but once out there they meet Du
Plessis, a hard-bitten Afrikaaner who owns a decaying game
reserve.
When Du Plessis sees Danny's skill as a vet, he asks Danny and
Sarah to buy into the reserve and help him to turn it into a
successful game park. Sarah believes that it will be a fresh start
for all of them, a chance for them to become a proper family - and
she and Danny accept the offer and make the life-altering decision
to move to South Africa.
The series then focuses on the trials and tribulations of the
dysfunctional Trevanion tribe as they adjust to life in a very
different land. Early stories focus on their struggle to get the
game park up and running - finding and looking after the animals
that will be its main attraction and dealing with the dangers of
life out in the bush.
Then, as the first tourists arrive, charming but ruthless rival
game-park owner Alex Tate becomes a threat, both to Danny and
Sarah's business and to their marriage. The family also have to
contend with elephant poachers, bush fires, runaway children and a
drunken Du Plessis as they attempt to build a new and exciting life
for themselves under southern skies.
Will they succeed?
