*GALE WARNING IN FORCE* Northerly 25 knots, rising to 35 knots early this evening. Turning southwest 40 knots this evening. Sea becoming very rough. Northerly swell rising to 3 metres offshore for a time. Poor visibility in rain, heavy and possibly thundery at times, easing overnight.
Outlook following 3 days: Southwest 40 knots with very rough sea, easing Tuesday morning 25 knots and late Tuesday 15 knots. Becoming variable 10 knots late Wednesday.

A low moves east across the upper North Island today. A strong southwesterly flow develops over the region this evening, then gradually eases on Tuesday. A ridge builds over the country on Wednesday.

Saturday: Easterly 15 knots rising to northeast 30 knots gusting 40 knots early this afternoon. Changing southwest 35 knots gusting 50 knots this evening. Sea becoming very rough this evening. Poor visibility in rain, heavy and possibly thundery at times.
Sunday: Southwest 35 knots gusting 45 knots, easing to southwest 25 knots gusting 35 knots in the morning. Very rough sea easing in the morning. Fair visibility in a few showers.
Outlook until midnight Wednesday: Monday: Southwest 30 knots. Cloudy periods, a few showers. Tuesday: Southwest 25 knots easing to 15 knots in the evening. Cloudy periods, a few showers. Wednesday: Southwest 10 knots easing to variable 5 knots in the evening. Fine spells, chance showers.
Swell forecast to midnight Wednesday: Northerly rising to 1.5 metres today, then dying out Sunday.
