A low approaches from the Tasman Sea today, becoming slow moving west of central New Zealand. On Thursday, the low weakens as it moves eastwards across the North Island. A ridge builds behind the low and covers most of New Zealand by Friday.

Tuesday: Variable 5 knots. Northeast 10 knots developing late morning then becoming northerly 10 knots but northwest 15 knots north of Slipper Island in the evening. Smooth sea becoming slight late morning. Fair visibility in showers developing early morning, becoming poor visibility in heavy falls with possible thunderstorms in the evening.
Outlook until midnight Friday: Wednesday: Northwest rising 20 knots at night. Showers, possibly heavy. Thursday: Rising westerly 25 knots early, changing southerly 15 knots late. Showers easing. Friday: Tending southeast 10 knots. Showers clearing.
Swell forecast to midnight Friday: Northerly half a metre or less.
