Friends of Motueka Hospital Trust
The Supreme Winner of the 2009 National TrustPower Community Awards.
The "Jack Inglis Friendship Hospital", Motueka is a $12 million dollar state of the art hospital which has been built by funds raised by the community over the past 16 years, a remarkable feat for a town of 8,000.
When the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board decided to close the unprofitable existing community hospital in Motueka, the people of Motueka joined forces to save the hospital and in the process ended up fundraising and building a whole new facility to meet the community's needs.
As far as we, know this is the first hospital in New Zealand to be owned by the people for the people, providing jobs for 61 staff and with the profits being reinvested back into the Trust and into additional facilities.
