Returning Series. In the fourth series of this popular show, once again the rescues performed across the summer by the lifeguards at South Piha are the main focus of the series. Series four features just as much human drama as previous series, as locals, visitors and tourists discover that Piha rips have no mercy, no matter how experienced they think they might be in the water. Cameras will continue to follow the Piha surf boat crews throughout the New Zealand carnival season, with patrols at the Northern Regionals at Mt Maunganui, the North Island Champs at Waihi and the Nationals at Gisborne. Cameras will also continue to follow the lifeguards on duty with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew, which attends the most serious emergencies. New this series is the 'Lifeguard Exchange Programme', where selected lifeguards from all over New Zealand are invited to guard Piha and experience the rough West Coast and its rescues. Viewers will see East Coast lifeguards taken to their limits, and lifeguards from beaches such as St Kilda, and Brighton from the South Island, and Titahi Bay, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne from the North Island will get the Piha experience. In addition, a lifeguard exchange between Piha and Muriwai, New Zealand's second most dangerous beach, will take place. Plus, water awareness needs to start early, so this series sees the kids from the 'nippers' and the 'tadpoles' junior surf programmes return to the screen, the intention being to teach the kids to develop a healthy respect for the beach with an emphasis on "great fun, wild and crazy times, fabulous excitement, marvellous events, and a great opportunity to learn."
