The Mucking In office has now closed, but you can
still send in nominations that will be kept on file for a possible
series in the future.
What we are looking
for
The people we are looking for as recipients are those who are
exceptional within your community - they are standout in their
generosity toward others whether they know them or not. They
are the people who go
way beyond their family and
friends in their kindness - it may be someone who does major
voluntary works or someone who tirelessly other the years never
fails to care for people way beyond what everyone else does.
More often than not these people are motivated by a generous heart
and quietly go about their business not seeking any form of
recognition and that's where you come in. As we receive hundreds of
nominations, it would be unfair to make exceptions
The person or couple you have in mind must have no knowledge of what you are about to do. If they are a member of your family, find someone else to nominate them - you can be involved but we do prefer non family members to nominate the recipient. Mucking In will only accept nominations for individuals. Unfortunately we are not able to accept nominations for trusts, community homes, charities, schools or local organisations.
Please remember, your nomination is part of a television programme, which requires good talent and interviews. Our nominators MUST be willing to speak on camera to tell the audience why the recipient is so special, as do the other people that are willing to back up the nomination and those who volunteer during the garden makeover. When putting together a nomination, please also consider whether the person you are nominating would be willing to be on television.
We need the nomination in writing - either post us a letter or send us an email. (our addresses are below) Your nomination should include:
- why you think this person is a good recipient. Include what kind of person they are (ie. are they the kind of person, who quietly gets on with things behind the scenes, humble, shy? Or are they passionate and outspoken about their cause?)
- their age
- examples of what they have done - in detail (Remember we do our initial selection from your letter so detail is very important)
- names and phone numbers of other people (non family members) who also think this person is a worthy recipient especially people who have benefited from their kindness
- what their garden is like (photos of the property are not
necessary at this stage, but would be very helpful as we will ask
for them if the nomination is taken further)
If your nomination is successful here's what happens:
The key factor for Mucking In is that although it is a television
programme, it is also a collaboration between the Mucking In team
and the community - we can't make it without a committed nominator
and a supportive community (ie you and the others who want to thank
someone special in your midst).
Initially our researcher would contact you and ask you to tell us, in as much detail as possible, all the different things your recipient does for others. We are building as big a profile as we can get of the recipient without talking with them or them having any idea what we are doing. We are also interested in your community, and the organisations the recipient is involved with. We will also ask you for any photos, videos, newspaper clippings etc about what the recipient is involved with. These are very important to the story.
If this all proves successful we will visit you and interview
you for our programme. On the same day, in conjunction with you, we
will surprise the recipient.
Before we surprise the recipient please be very careful who you
tell of your nomination - it is very important that it remains a
secret from the recipient.
Volunteers
It will be at least three weeks before we return to create the new
garden and this is really where all your help comes to the fore. We
take two days to build the garden and because this is a joint
effort between the community and the Mucking In team we ask the
community to provide the food catering for the two days - morning
and afternoon teas and lunches (there are about 20 of us in total
plus all the local support).
One idea we have seen that works well is each charitable organisation that our recipient is involved with takes responsibility for a meal.
We also need volunteers to turn up for the "mucking in" to help do the garden. We will usually decide on a particular area of the property to landscape, and this means that volunteers will be needed to help weed and clear up the rest of the garden, as well as contributing to the new landscape. We often also need the services of local trades people - electricians, builders, plumbers etc.
In addition we always require two volunteers to assist with site safety - these people should be found by the nominator in advance of the garden makeover days but can be different people on each day. These two will be part of our safety plan, which ensures that visitors to the site are working in a safe environment and aware of any activities, machinery or tools which would require extra care.
So the more people from your community involved the better - either cooking or working in the garden or both for those who are very keen!
For the two days we work in the garden we send our recipient (with a friend, partner or relative) away to a luxury destination.
Our experience has been that people have really enjoyed the whole 'Mucking In' process. Building the garden is two hard days work but is also a lot of fun. Plus it is one opportunity to say thank you to someone who does so much for others and asks for nothing in return.
We look forward to your nomination. You can reach us at:
