A tourism research company says the Lions tour of New Zealand this winter will generate an estimated $250 million for the economy.
Horwath Asia Pacific Limited were commissioned by the Rugby Union to look into the economic spin off from the 11-match tour starting in June.
The rugby union expect 8,000 people to travel to New Zealand on official tours with another 8,000 travelling independently.
The union's Lions Series Project Manager Nigel Cass says while most people will be coming for the three tests in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland there will still be plenty of tourists visiting the provincial regions.
Cass says
as well as the direct foreign exchange benefits of $120 million,
the series will provide New Zealand with flow-on spending,
including additional future tourism benefits, of $250
million.
