All Blacks given huge scare

A brave Welsh side gave the All Blacks a huge scare as the All Blacks struggled to a 26-25 win on Sunday morningĀ at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

In an entertaining match, Wales showed their bold effort in last year's World Cup quarter-final against the All Blacks was no fluke in front of 74,000 fans.

Second half tries to winger Joe Rokocoko and Auckland team-mate Mils Muliaina, were enough to overcome the sinbinning of replacement centre Ma'a Nonu for a late shoulder charge, to see the All Blacks home.

With the stadium roof closed sheltering the players from some inclement weather, Wales began the match strongly pressing the All Blacks back into their own 22 and were rewarded for their efforts when they took the lead courtesy of a Stephen Jones penalty.

Carter responded with a penalty of his own to tie the score before the roof nearly came off the Millennium Stadium in the 21st minute.

After an All Black turnover, the Welsh drove into the All Black 22 and after a clever kick by Jones, Tom Shanklin regathered and touched down and after Jones missed the conversion, Wales were in front 8-3.

Jones added another penalty before the All Blacks nabbed their first try through a flying Rokocoko after good work from Muliaina. Carter added the conversion to trail 10-11.

Both sides traded penalties before referee Tony Spreadbury blew for halftime with Wales leading 14-13.

Second Half

With Welsh confidence boosted by their halftime lead, the All Blacks were quickly forced back onto their own line after a Dan Carter fumble.

The resulting scrum saw Wales drive the blindside and Mefin Davies barged over in the corner.

That stunned the All Blacks into action and through captain McCaw they re-claimed the kick-off and after several Dan Carter touches, Muliaina charged through a couple of ineffective tackles and dotted down and after Carter missed the conversion, the All Blacks trailed 19-18.

A Rokocoko special soon after saw the All Blacks re-take the lead, but at 23-19 the match was by no means safe as Wales maintained their intensity.

Wales added two penalties through replacement goalkicker Gavin Henson either side of a Carter penalty to leave the final scoreline 26-25 and come within a whisker of breaking their 50 year losing streak to the All Blacks.
