Do birds use internal GPS systems?

Ground breaking research into how birds navigate has revealed that migratory animals sense their latitude and longitude from the earth's magnetic field.

It has long been accepted that birds use some kind of internal compass but this study has proved that the animals utilise an internal Global Positioning System (GPS) as well.
