A Christian pro-life group claims an increasing number of elderly New Zealanders are afraid of being euthanased by medical staff.

The group Family Life International says it has had a marked increase in enquiries in the past 12 months from people wanting to know what they can do to legally protect themselves.

Spokesman Brendan Malone says his organisation has a generic patient protection document that many have adopted to protect themselves.

He says the beliefs espoused by people like Dr Philip Nitschke, the man dubbed Doctor Death, falsely promote the idea that elderly people are a burden on society and prematurely ending their lives is a good thing.
