New Zealand police are upping the ante against people who break the speed limits near schools, which are now as low as 40 kilometres per hour in some areas.

The Speed Kills Kids programme officially began on Wednesday, coinciding with the start of the new school year.

Tickets will be handed out to anyone caught travelling above 54kph between the hours of 7.30am and 6pm.

The speed limit will be enforced within 250 metres of boundaries of all schools and pre-schools.

National Road Policing Manager Dave Cliff says police will also operate during weekends when there are school events on.

He says in the past five years more than 1,200 child pedestrians have been killed or injured during school terms.
