For more than a decade Waitangi has come under the eye of the media.
During the 1990s it became a flash point for Maori protest. But now many of the former protesters have moved on and a younger faces are taking their place with a new strategy for getting their message across.
It is a much younger line up of protesters these days but the message never changes - Tino Rangatiratanga. The term loosely means absolute sovereignty, though much of the debate around the Treaty of Waitangi relates to the mis-translation of the term.
Titewhai Harawira and her whanau have been the face of protest at Waitangi for many years.
"Everything that we have got has come out of protest.
"Whether people love us, hate us or otherwise we have achieved positive results," she says.
This year a Harawira was again leading the charge.
Leading the voice of dissent was Titewhai Harawira's granddaughter and the daughter of Maori MP Hone Harawira. Te Whenua Harawira is more an organiser than a talker but she doesn't take a backward step.
