A 48-year-old New Plymouth man has appeared in court over the murder of a 55-year-old woman, after she was found dead in her home on Monday.

Police received reports the woman had not been seen for several days. When they went to her home in Westown they found her stabbed to death in a pool of blood.

Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Coward says the man was arrested just hours after the woman's body was discovered.

A scene examination is being carried out at the house and detectives are continuing to canvass the area.

Coward says he can't reveal the relationship between the accused and the victim.
