We are asking you to share with us what you are doing
for Waitangi Day and what it means to you. Just email us

with the word Waitangi on the subject line.
Pictures of your celebrationsbare also
welcome.
I am spending Waitangi Day at home in Nelson, but I would love to
be able to actually go to Waitangi for the celebrations. I think it
would be good for all New Zealanders to be able to take part. I
don't think that we should change this day to New Zealand Day. It
would be better to have more of a nation wide celebration of the
day instead with more involvement marae celebrations locally.

I wish I could be Celebrating Waitangi Day, but unfortunately
the NZ Government Department I work in for Sydney doesn't recognize
this day. So, I will be working. I will be thinking of all NZ
Government Departments including the one I work for in NZ who have
this day off to Celebrate and recognize a significant day for our
people (whereas I will be working).

We will be staying at home resting and enjoying the fact that we
are New Zealanders celebrating New Zealand Day wondering where our
Summer has gone!

Certainly not remembering it, thank goodness. I left NZ two
years ago and was glad to put Waitangi Day and all its shameful
squabbling behind me - what an embarrassment for NZ. I couldn't get
over how Australia celebrates and embraces their National Day with
people even greeting you with "Happy Australia Day". People here
actually celebrate the day with "peaceful" activities and Aussies
get into the spirit of what it actually represents.Yes, when it
comes to the atrocities they commited on their own indigenous
people needs acknowledgement and they still have a long way to go
in righting those wrongs but at least for one day peace reigns and
tourists aren't confused and embarrassed!

As an English born New Zealand resident I made a particular
effort to learn about Waitangi and the history behind the day.
While there are many grievances still to be heard it is still a
historic day for a very young country and should be recognised as
such. Maybe it should be taken for what it is - a chance to
recognise past wrongs and celebrate our multi-cultural
future.
