New Zealand's commitment to East Timor could be extended by another year.
The new Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, wants the mission extended and believes extra police should be sent ahead of a presidential election in April.
He says while the overall situation has improved in East Timor, security remains volatile and particularly fragile in parts of the capital, Dili.
New Zealand currently has a contingent of around 120 in the tiny nation.
Their deployment is due to end on February 25.
