As orchards and vineyards around New Zealand scramble to find seasonal workers, Central Otago growers are trialling a World Bank scheme with a group of Pacific islanders.

The project is already winning praise from the industry.

After just one week, a group of Vanuatuan workers are already the pick of the seasonal worker bunch.

Thirty have flown into Central Otago to work various orchards and vineyards, providing jobs and money they just can't get at home.

They are all from Ambrym Island, and will pool their earnings for the village back home.

The men will work in Central Otago until mid May, then head home.
