Auckland City councillor Christine Caughey will not name the international financier she says is behind a bid to build a World Cup-worthy stadium at Auckland's Carlaw Park.

The venue has resurfaced as a potential site for hosting the 2011 Rugby World Cup, in spite of the official announcement in December that Eden Park is the site, with North Harbour Stadium as the back-up option.

Carlaw Park was ruled out by the government because it is too small and in private ownership.

However, Caughey says a very major international financier with experience in stadia development is backing the idea, and she does not believe Eden Park is a starter.

She says the Carlaw Park site would be an iconic one.
