Shortland Street character - Sophie
McKay
Sophie McKay arrived in Ferndale as a sweet, but ditzy teen, when
her family moved from Australia.
Settling into Ferndale High was easy for Sophie; she made a
lot of friends, but one person she just couldn't warm to was
Scarlett Valentine.
In 2007, Scarlett's frustrations with the McKay family spilled
over and she attempted to run Hunter down in her dad's SUV.
Dealing with the fallout and shock of Scarlett's actions led
Sophie to question her own previously shallow life.
Sophie rallied her friends around her and she demonstrated her
social conscience with a Blog page.
When she met Nate, it was instant attraction.
Unfortunately, Nate was wrestling with his sexuality and after
sleeping with Sophie, declared himself to be gay.
Sophie took a chance dating friend and Tourette's sufferer Angus -
but the romance fizzled.
Sophie made new friends in Tuesday Warner, and TK's nephews, Tane
and Wiremu.
But Sophie was on the side-lines as a car race went wrong, and
Wiremu struck Tane down with their own vehicle.
Despite a lack of attraction, Sophie began a short-lived
relationship with Tane.
In 2008 Sophie dealt with the loss of her mother, Justine,
who faked her own death and moved to Australia to live under
witness protection.
Later, she befriended Maia's lesbian friend Roz, much to
Hunter and
Callum 's chagrin.
2009 saw her accept new responsibility.
At Ferndale High she was made Head Girl.
She also helped new kid
Daniel Potts
settle into
life in Ferndale.
After a rough start, she and Daniel became girlfriend and
boyfriend. But Daniel's immaturity saw this relationship
falter.
Family issues and her parents separation distracted Sophie and she
found a friend and confidante in her cafeteria boss, Kieran
Mitchell.
Despite the age difference, they became a couple.
Against her father's (and Kieran's) wishes Sophie left
school.
She decided to return to school on the proviso that she could
continue to see Kieran.
The two became engaged. Then she heard that Kieran
had killed Morgan Braithwaite in 2009's season
finale.
Sid (Kieran's brother) later confessed to the killings to get
Kieran off the hook. Then he fled the country with Kieran's
help.
Sophie married Kieran in March 2010.
But the happiness was shortlived and Sophie felt Kieran was still
lying to her about everything - (she was right)!
She left Kieran and immediately leapt into a relationship with her
lecturer Ashton.
Ashton turned out to be a controlling stalker and Sophie broke off
with him. Kieran threatened him and warned him to stay away from
Sophie.
Then Kieran was killed when a Thai gang came to Ferndale to find
him.
Sophie was now a widow, with a business to run.
By mid October the strain of running her ex's business The IV Bar
was too much and she took a job at the hospital as Rachel's
PA.
She started seeing Daniel Potts again but her happiness was
overshadowed when her dad Callum was injured in a devastating
fire.
Sophie McKay is played by the very popular
Kimberley Crossman.
