No title for Wheel Blacks

The Wheel Blacks' hopes of claiming a first World Wheelchair Rugby Championship title have been dashed after the USA won the final 34-30 in Christchurch.

New Zealand, the Athens Paralympic champions, battled hard but could not get past the top team in the world.

The Americans led by one after the first and second quarters, and by 25-23 going into the final quarter.

The visitors played a near-faultless display of wheelchair rugby to claim the victory and their third World Championship title.

A packed Westpac Stadium cheered on the Wheel Blacks during the final, which was shown live on tvnz.co.nz.

The Kiwis played better against the Americans than earlier in the tournament, when the USA romped home 42-34 in pool play.

Canada, the defending champions, finished third after defeating Great Britain 23-19.
