A friend of a New Zealand resident being held captive in Iraq says it is hard to predict what the hostage takers will do next.

Harmeet Sooden and three other members of Christian Peacemaker Teams were kidnapped in Baghdad in November.

One of the group, American Tom Fox, was found dead on Friday.

The three, excluding Fox, were shown in a video broadcast on Arab TV last week dated February 28.

Sooden's friend Donna Mulhearn says it is an extremely difficult time.

She says she can only pray and hope that Sooden and the two other hostages are kept alive.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is continuing to make strenuous efforts to secure Sooden's release from Iraq.

Meantime, a memorial service has been held in Baghdad for the murdered hostage by Christian Peacemaker Teams.

The body of the American peace activist was found in the Iraqi capital at the weekend.

Iraqi police say Fox was tortured before being shot dead.
