Sacked climate scientist Dr Jim Salinger is planning an unjustified dismissal claim against the Crown-owned company NIWA.

He has been dismissed from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric research, because of what it says were unauthorised dealings with the media.

Salinger disputes the claim, but says the reality of not having a job is harder to take.

He says it's like a part of him has died, and he has already had discussions with his lawyer.

Salinger says he has a passion for climate science and after three decades in the industry, being told to leave is like a death

He expects to take a case for unjustified dismissal to the Employment Court.

Salinger says the nature of instances where NIWA says he breached policy are trivial.

NIWA is saying little about the sacking.

Salinger has worked in climate science for more than 30 years, and was a member of the United Nations' International Panel on Climate Change.

In a statement, NIWA has confirmed Salinger is no longer employed by NIWA.

It says the issue is a confidential employment matter.
