"Trekkies" are in for a treat with Hollywood visiting Auckland for the premiere of the new Star Trek movie.

The film had its world premiere at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday night with more than 1500 people in attendance.

The film, starring Eric Bana as the intergalactic villain Nero, is a prequel, going back in time to the maiden voyage of the USS Starship Enterprise.

Former Shortland Street star Karl Urban plays "Bones" McCoy, the Enterprise's medical officer.

Paramount Pictures has protectively banned reviews of the film until later this month to protect ticket sales but online trekkies give the film (and Urban's performance) the thumbs up.
