The US Army is asking ONE News for help in protecting the privacy of two US soldiers in the wake of the story about a Whangarei man finding military secrets on his MP3 player.

Personal details were found stored on the player which Chris Ogle bought from a thrift shop in Oklahoma.

The story hit the headlines in the United States and the UK and caused embarrassment to American officials. The military information had details of US military bases in Germany and Iraq and personal details of soldiers, including their phone numbers and social security numbers.

Ogle has handed over the information to staff from the US Embassy, exchanging the second-hand MP3 player and a back-up disk for a new player.

The US Army has asked ONE News and international broadcasters such as CNN to blur some images to protect the privacy of the soldiers.
