A possible shark attack near Auckland has prompted a call for vigilance for anyone planning a dip at the beach.
Fisherman Ken Lindberg says he was checking his net at Maraetai when something got its jaws around his leg, leaving him with a gaping wound and a ripped Achilles tendon.
He believes it was either a shark or a stingray.
Fishing guru Geoff Thomas thinks it could have been a bronze whaler shark. He says a lot of them come into the shallows around Auckland at this time of year to reproduce and they are known to attack people.
Thomas says while the odds of a shark attack are low, people can be seriously injured when a bronzie goes for them.
Lindberg says he has not been out to set his net since the incident.
