A Kiwi company has joined forces with US-based UOP to make biofuel from algae.

Aquaflow Bionomic Corporation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Honeywell company UOP.

Together they will use existing UOP technology and wild algae from Marlborough to produce renewable fuel that meets international standards.

Aquaflow Chairman Barry Leay says the algae comes from oxidation ponds, where it breaks down effluent. He says that process won't be affected because they collect the algae after it has done its job.

Barry Leay says it is very different to biofuel crops like corn or palm oil, which are harvested annually or biannually.
