The Mental Health Foundation is reflecting on 30 years of service.

It was kick started by the 1977 Telethon where just over $2 million was raised.

A book titled Change of Mind, which details the foundation's journey, will be launched at a birthday celebration at Te Papa.

Mental Health Foundation chief executive Judi Clements says mental illnesses are now more accepted as being part of the human condition and there has been a huge shift in attitude.

But she says the foundation still has some way to go.
