An eleven year-old-boy is following in the footsteps of a New Zealand multi-millionaire with an ambitious invention.

Hailed as the next Allan Gibbs, Krishant Rupan has invented a lower budget amphibious craft.

The craft, effectively a jet ski with retractable wheels, was launched on Saturday with a successful test drive.

Rupan was given the green light on his creation after entering the Let's Get Inventing TV show, but his dad initially underestimated his son's idea.

"He told me about it and I didn't take much notice of it, but then he started working on it and I thought, this guy can do something," says father Kishor Rupan.

While the craft could still cost tens of thousands of dollars if it was ever to go on sale, it is still a far sight cheaper than the $250,000 Aquada by kiwi inventor Gibbs.

A team of engineers from Buckley Systems helped him out with the invention.
