Expectant mum Nicole Kidman says she burst into tears the first time she saw her baby on an ultrasound.

The Australian actress, in the last weeks of her pregnancy, also told how she fainted while on a horse on the set of her new Baz Luhrmann-directed epic, Australia, and how an organic vegetable garden at her home in Nashville, Tennessee, has been a source of relaxation.

Kidman, who turns 41 on Friday, made the revelations in a cover story for the new issue of Vogue in the US.

"When I first saw the baby on the ultrasound, I started crying," Kidman told the magazine.

"I didn't think I'd get to experience that in my lifetime.

"I like the unpredictable nature of it.

"To feel life growing with you is something very, very special, and I'm going to embrace that completely."

The pregnancy, however, has not been problem-free.

Kidman's Australian co-star, Hugh Jackman, told the magazine "Nicole had horrendous morning sickness" on the set.

"But she's a trouper," Jackman added.

"She put everything on the line every day."

Kidman said the heat in the outback also took its toll.

"I was sitting on a horse once and I remember thinking, Gosh, this is what it feels like before you faint and then I fainted," the Oscar-winner recalled.

The home she shares with husband, country music star Keith Urban, in Nashville has provided a place of rest for the expectant mum, who has discovered a green thumb.

"We have a farm there, and I have an organic vegetable garden," Kidman said.

"This is a path I'd not taken before.

"My mum's always gardened.

"My sister gardens.

"And I've now conformed to the Kidman women's hobby of gardening."

But, the feature reveals Kidman has not quit the odd wild party.

Vogue describes how the actress "tossed a party at her pal Naomi Watts's house and made a grand entrance carrying an enormous python".
