The price of chicken and eggs is the latest to go up, adding to consumer pain at a time when dairy, fruit and vegetables have all seen price increases in recent weeks.

Now there are worries that industries using eggs will also increase prices of their products.

One such example is the local bakery, which cannot be run without breaking a few eggs.

"Probably a hundred and sixty dozen a hundred and seventy dozen a week," says Joe Janus of Janus Bakkerij in Lower Hutt.

The rising price of the humble egg is leaving bakers scrambling to keep up.

A bacon and egg pie takes 60 eggs to cook. A year ago, 60 eggs would cost the average bakery about $11. In a year, the price has gone up for the eggs alone by $5.

Eggs and chicken meat are more expensive because the cost of the grains chickens eat is climbing.

Chicken feed is 70% of a poultry farmer's cost.

"We have grains that have in some cases gone up by over a 100% in the last 15 months," says Michael Brooks of the Poultry Industry Association.

The industry says farmers have to pass on the price pain to consumers.

Consumers are complaining that chicken is more expensive than red meats, but know the high prices are hurting producers.

In the United States, huge floods in the grain-growing state of Iowa now look set to drive the cost of grain up even further.

Everyone's predicting egg and chicken prices will just keep rising.

"I've been in business about 20 years and during that time I think this is the last 12 months we've experienced the most increase in food costs definitely," says Janus.

The high prices will definitely mean leaner times for those keen on a diet rich in eggs and dairy.
