Gisborne police are looking for the person responsible for running amok with a chainsaw in the city over the weekend, attacking trees.

One of the large trees cut down was 65 years old.

The attack started at around 10pm on Saturday on the city's beach front. Four large Norfolk Pines were felled and three others so badly damaged that they have had to be cut down by council staff.

A large tree at a city high school was also cut down.
