The success of the Flight of the Conchords could soon be echoed.

That's if organisers of New Zealand Music Month have their way.

The month of celebrating our home grown music kicked off on Monday with Arts and Culture Minister Judith Tizard joining Kiwi rock legend Chris Knox on stage at the official launch.

Seven years ago, Kiwi music made up only around 6% of sales. Now that figure is closer to 20%.

"New Zealand music is now acceptable to the hoi-polloi, it wasn't when I started, there's a recognition that it's ok to like our indigenous stuff, which is fantastic," says Knox.

And much of the credit for that goes to New Zealand Music Month.

"It gives us a boost every year, we definitely notice the increase in sales, it's almost like people come out and support the industry each month when May rolls around," says Oliver Labone, of The CD and DVD store.

This year 450 gigs have been confirmed and 60 new titles scheduled for release during May.

"New Zealand music is about us, it's reflects us politically, culturally, artistically, it's just about who we are," says Anthony Healey of NZ Music Month.

And industry experts say music month still has an important role to play - with illegal downloads cutting into sales and artists' incomes.
