A pioneer of positive psychology is telling New Zealanders to stop cutting successful people down to size.

US professor Martin Seligman has gathered and assessed data from organisations nationwide which shows happy people are more productive and creative than those who are unhappy.

Seligman was invited to New Zealand by human resources consultancy, the Foresight Institute.

Institute director Jamie Ford says businesses need to develop optimistic people who will be able to ride out downturns.

He also says New Zealand needs to recognise the value of celebrating success.
