A record price has been set for a painting by a living New Zealand artist in Auckland.

Bill Hammond's 1996 work Fortified Gang Headquarters fetched a jaw dropping sum.

Also sold for $110,000, was the iconic ANZAC image Simpson and his Donkey by Kiwi sapper Horrace Moore-Jones.

It portrays Australian John Simpson Kirkpatrick and his donkey Murphy carrying a wounded man down to the beach at Gallipoli.

The painting's revered in Australia and features on their hundred dollar note.
