The bid to save New Zealand's most endangered bird has received an awesome boost with a recent arrival.

Five Kakapo chicks recently hatched on Codfish Island, near Stewart Island.

The world's Kakapo population now stands at 91 with two more eggs still to hatch.

Department of Conservation staff and volunteers say they are working around the clock to keep the precious birds safe.

DOC has released a video of one of the birds.
