Auckland University has cracked an exam-selling ring, but says it's powerless to do anything about it.
A new website run by students is buying up old exam scripts, and then on-selling them at a profit.
Staff have now been warned answers to previous exam questions are circulating, and to be aware of this when they're setting tests.
While it's not cheating, University Vice-Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon says it undermines the standards of academic integrity, and independence of thought.
The website buys exam scripts from the past two years that scored more than 85% for $25.
It then sells them for $50 to students in a move it says takes "the guesswork out of studying".
On the website's FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), its creators maintain the system's legality.
"Exam scripts are the intellectual property of the students who sit exams" the website reads.
"Just like any other commodity, it is perfectly acceptable to buy or sell them."
