A British woman has been reunited with the engagement ring she
threw away after a lovers' tiff nearly 70 years ago.
Violet Booth, now 88, hurled the ring into a Leicestershire field
during an argument with her husband-to-be, Samuel, in 1941.
The couple quickly made up and searched frantically for the ring,
but when that proved fruitless, they bought a replacement and
married.
It was not until their grandson, Leighton Boyes, went searching in
the field with a metal detector that the ring was found - in
perfect condition - after just two hours of looking with the help
of some maps and Booth's vivid memory.
Booth said the ring brought back good memories of her husband, who
died 15 years ago.
"I didn't ever think I would see it again," Booth told British
newspapers.
"I couldn't believe it when he brought it back. I was very
emotional.
"It certainly brought back a few memories. It's something to
remember Samuel by - he was a very nice man.
"I can't stop looking at it. It means a lot to me."
Boyes said: "I never expected to find it, especially after all
those years of modern-day ploughing...it was only buried about
three to four inches down, and it was not even damaged.
"I just gave it a wipe and that was it. It was incredible."
Booth's son, Andrew, said he remembered hearing the tale of the
lost ring.
"We all wish Dad could have been here to see it as well," he
said.
