Police are being urged not to rush the taser into front line policing.
The Auckland District Law Society's Public Issues Committee says tasers should be seen as a weapon of next-to-last resort, falling just short of deadly force.
But it believes that often wasn't the case during the recent taser trial.
Convenor Noel Cox says his committee is not totally opposed to the taser and it could prove very beneficial if used appropriately.
But he says there must be strict guidelines around its use.
Police have yet to decide whether to introduce the taser to the frontline.
The committee is calling for that decision to be made by an independent body.
