For the first time since Sunday's brazen smash and grab at the Waiouru Military Museum, media have been allowed inside the valour alcove to survey the damage.

It took thieves less than four minutes to break into the building, smash through 6mm thick safety glass and get away with the 96 medals, including nine Victoria Crosses.

Police have now visited 600 local homes to see who was in the Waiouru area at the time of the crime.

The head of the investigation will decide in the next few days whether to accept British collector Lord Ashcroft's offer of a $200,000 reward for the return of the medals.
