The Professional Firefighters Union is concerned lives and property on the North Shore are at risk due to a shortage of crews in the area.

It says fire crews are being moved away from the shore to the Rodney/Orewa area to improve coverage but that's leaving the North Shore short.

National vice-president of the Firefighter Union Athol Conway says the North Shore is being put in danger, which was highlighted by a serious fire in Belmont on Wednesday.

He says fire engines are being sent out without enough team members on board, which breaks OSH regulations.

Conway says they have discussed it with the Fire Service but they still haven't had a an adequate answer.
