New laws have been passed aimed at protecting and promoting the public's right to clean drinking water.

MPs have passed the Health Amendment Bill which intends to put a risk management approach on water supply.

The legislation also comes with $150 million worth of funding to help water companies and local councils ensure people can access clean water supplies.

According to the government over half a million New Zealanders currently receive water that doesn't comply with New Zealand drinking water standards.
