Banks are warning customers not to be taken in by a new travellers cheque scam sweeping the capital.
The rort involves people applying over the internet for space in a flat and offering to pay their first rent instalment by travellers cheque.
The phoney cheques are sent from overseas to the potential flatmates, who are asked to bank them and return the balance back to the sender by Western Union transfer.
Banks are asking the public to be aware, and if they suspect a travellers cheque may be a fake to contact police.
