'Bringing the Cup Home'
Eon Design Centre was invited by TVNZ to design and supply
product for their set at the America's Cup in Valencia. As
they represent this country's largest collection of locally
designed furniture, homeware and accessories, Eon Design Centre
could select items that meet the physical requirements of the media
room while showcasing a cohesive cross section of New Zealand
design.
From the sophisticated engineering of Formways Life chair, to the
functional sculptural forms of David Trubridges Nikau Light, to the
iconic images created by New Zealand artists on the Esther Diamond
cushions, the sum of the various parts truly represent the
diversity and raw sophistication that is becoming synonymous with
New Zealand design.
The credit that runs after each programme, and the TVNZ website, will direct enquiries to the website of Eon Design Centre. The website acts as a portal to the world of New Zealand contemporary furniture and object design. Most items on the set can be purchased via our online store. The aim is to generate international sales and foster media and export opportunities.
The designers behind the TVNZ set
David Trubridge
The Nikau light, used in TVNZ's Valencia set is Trubridge's most
recent lighting design. It incorporates his signature use of
negative space and use of overlapping layers of plywood to create a
woven effect. The flexibility of aeronautical plywood creates an
elegant and sculptural form that refers to and combines elements
from our Pacific and European heritage.
Esther Diamond
Each Esther Diamond cushion is hand screen printed on moleskin and
provides a unique opportunity for all New Zealanders to own the
work of some of our most recognised and interesting artists, and
for visitors to take home a slice of our cultural heritage. Esther
Diamond was established by Sandy Reefman in 2004 as a way of taking
art into the realm of design to make it more accessible. The
artists contributing work to her collections include Dick Frizzell,
Martin Poppelwell, Leanne Culy, Fane Flaws and Para Matchitt. More
recently Esther Diamond has added bed linen and tea towels to the
range.
In the TVNZ set we have selected work from the Sailor Boy, Tuki
Tuki and Flora Fauna series. These iconic images are distinctively
New Zealand and are already attracting the attention of
international magazines and collectors.
Dick Frizzell has created a new cushion design and Martin
Poppelwell a new tea towel Design to commemorate New Zealand's
involvement at the America's Cup in Valencia.
Kevin Webby
Inspired by New Zealand's varied landscapes, Kevin was drawn to
design and explores various materials in his range of lighting and
furniture. His Blackseed Coat Tree references the familiar in New
Zealand with koru forms and the angular suggestion of signposts - a
subtle and refined fusion of Maori and European iconography. The
dark stained plywood reminds us of ponga logs and forest
floors.
David Moreland
With a number of designs to his name, the elegant and architectural
Framed chair - the form which bares the influence of The Group
Architects and the themes addressed in their work during the 1950s
- is probably the most recognisable. Designed by Moreland and
produced exclusively by Eon Design Centre, the Framed chair is the
ultimate meeting of form and function. Removable seat and back
cushions allow for an all timber form, or a chance to introduce
colour and texture in a fabric of ones own choice. The Framed Range
also includes other seating and table options and an outdoor
version is also being developed.
History of Eon Design
At Eon Design Centre it is our ethos to provide an accessible
environment that inspires innovation and creates opportunities for
New Zealand designers. It is a space where people are participants,
not spectators, and can feel comfortable interacting with design.
We want to encourage people to discover how objects interact with
each other and the space in which they exist. We believe that the
objects around you, should speak about who you are.
Eon began in 1999 as a gallery, a retail design outlet and a cafe,
working out of an inviting industrial space in Kingsland. The
creation of this unique environment was primarily to house and
expose the talent and creativity displayed by New Zealand
designers. Eon was founded and developed by design innovator -
Angela Roper. Angela has committed herself and her company to the
New Zealand design industry, involving herself in a number of roles
with a mind to facilitating and encouraging progression.
Over the years Angela has been a council member for the Designers Institute of New Zealand, chaired the Advisory Board for the Master in Design Management degree at Unitec in Auckland and was on the committee for the publicly funded gallery 'objectspace'. Angela is a talented designer who has made it her personal philosophy to inspire innovation amongst New Zealand designers, to provide opportunities and promote community. These values are embedded in the heart of Eon Design Centre.
Eon Design also works along side designers, increasing their
understanding of manufacturing, marketing and selling process.
Encouraging partnerships between designers, manufacturers and
suppliers so New Zealand designed product can meet the needs of the
global market. Aiming to establish and develop a sustainable
structure for the export of New Zealand Design Products.
