John McBeth - Host
John McBeth has been a sports broadcaster for 30 years.
He was New Zealand's leading radio rugby commentator for 10 years
and covered all the All Black tours, internal tours and the first
two World Cups. He joined TVNZ in 1993 as a commentator and
presenter.
Since then he has been involved in three Olympic Games, four
Commonwealth Games, three Americas Cup regattas and three Rugby
World Cups as well as numerous other sporting events.
John has also filled in as presenter of Good Morning and travelled
to Venezuela for an episode of Intrepid Journeys 2005. John regards
the winning of the Americas Cup in 1995 in San Diego as one of the
great moments of his career in sports broadcasting.
Peter Montgomery - Commentator
Known as the voice of New Zealand yachting, Peter Montgomery is one
of the worlds best-known yachting journalists.
Peter has covered eight Americas Cups, four Olympic Games, and
seven Whitbread Races in a career that spans more than 25 years.
His 1995 declaration The Americas Cup is now New Zealands cup has
come to symbolise New Zealands moment of victory. Peters sports
coverage has been recognised with awards for Sports Journalist of
the Year, Sports Broadcaster of the Year, Communicator of the Year,
and a New York Radio Festival Sports Award.
The New Zealand Yachting Federation awarded him the Bernard
Ferguson Trophy for Yachtsman of the Year in 1990, and in 1995 he
received an MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours. The 1996 New
Zealand Radio Awards recognised his Americas Cup coverage with best
news commentator, contributor or correspondent, best sports
presenter, commentator or contributor.
Peter has covered many other sporting events, and is a host and
rugby commentator for Radio Sport. In 1992, he played a yachting
commentator in a Hollywood movie about the Americas Cup.
Peter Lester - Commentator
Peter Lester is a professional sailor, consultant and commentator.
Peter has competed in yachting at the highest level, winning
several world champion titles.
He was named New Zealand Yachtsman on the year in 1977 and again in
1987. Peter has competed in the Americas Cup three times; as
tactician on board the New Zealand boat KZ1 in 1988, as the coach
of the Spanish team in 1992, and as tactician for Chris Dicksons
Tag Heuer Challenge in 1995.
When the Spanish were eliminated in 1992, Peter was asked to join
the TVNZ commentary team for the rest of the Cup as an expert
analyst. He went on to work as an expert commentator for TVNZ at
subsequent Americas Cups. Recently Peter was High Performance
Manager at Yachting New Zealand responsible for the New Zealand
Olympic Sailing Academy programme, and he remains actively engaged
in professional sailing abroad.
In Valencia, Peter is working for ONE Sport and host broadcaster
TWI.
Martin Tasker - Commentator,
ONE News Correspondent
Martin Tasker was brought up by the sea in England and worked as a
print and television journalist in Britain, Hong Kong and the USA,
including 12 years as a reporter, producer and director for the
BBC.
He has worked for TVNZ since moving to New Zealand in 1993,
covering his first Americas Cup in 1997.
Martin is an experienced sailor whose love of the sport has led him
to cover all the major yachting events, from the Olympic Games in
Sydney and Athens to the Whitbread, Volvo, Global Challenge and
solo round the world races. His coverage of the Volvo Ocean Race
pit-stop in Wellington last year won Broadcast of the Year at the
TP McLean Sports Journalism Awards.
In Valencia, Martin is commentating for ONE Sport and host
broadcaster TWI, and filing stories for ONE News.
