Tens of thousands of Hot Rod and rock 'n roll enthusiasts hit a wet Whangamata on the Coromandel for the annual Beach Hop.
While rain saw the event scaled back, 1000 cars cruised by as dancers hit the street.
Whangamata's main drag has a reputation for boyracers, but the Beach Hop is really something else.
"This isn't about petrolheads, this is about great American cars," said Beach Hop organiser Peter Stretch.
This is the sixth year of the Beach Hop, a celebration of the 1950s and 60s cars, the music and its people.
"It is really fantastic if you walk about tonight to see these classic cars cruising up and down the main street in perfect peace and harmony," said Stretch.
"It's a wonderful feeling and of course live music all weekend as well."
Whangamata is one of the North Island's most popular holiday spots. Over the new year period the population grows from just a few thousand to around 50,000m and the numbers for the Beach Hop easily rival that.
Last year 70,000 people turned up. This year the number is down to 40,000 with the weather, but businesses aren't complaining.
