Te Radar travels to Mali and the legendary Timbuktu, celebrating life and music at the 'Festival au Desert'. He treks to a Dogon community and spends time with some locals before he cruises along the Niger river and try's to escape the incessant dust. Te also makes a visit to lively Bamako, Mopti and the famous mud mosque at Djenne.
Te's pre-trip itinerary:
Day 1 Bamako
Arrive in Bamako and explore this bustling town at your own
leisure.
Day 2 Segou
Spend a morning bargaining at Bamako's market before we
head out for Segou.
Day 3 Djenne
Today we head for Djenne, built on an island when the Niger was in
flood. Djenne is dominated but the world's largest mud-built
mosque.
Day 4 Mopti
We continue our journey to Mopti, a lively port town.
Day 5 Dogon camp
We venture into Dogon villages for an overnight stay and the
opportunity to learn first hand about this fascinating culture.
Days 6-8 Niger River Cruise
A private 3-day river cruise is the perfect way to settle into the
pace of life in Mali.
Days 9-11 Festival in the Desert
We travel into the desert to the festival site, where three days of
African music and celebrations await us.
Day 12 Timbuktu
We return to Timbuktu for some more sightseeing.
Day 13 Douantza
Leaving Timbuctoo we cross the river by ferry and head South
through the Sahel to the town of Douantza.
Day 14 Segou
We return to Segou where we can rest at a hotel after our desert
adventure.
Day 15 Bamako
We drive to Bamako where the adventure comes to an end.
