Tent Prisons and Chain Gangs in Tuwharetoa?

Tent Prisons and Chain Gangs in Tuwharetoa?

Gangs of youths chained together, cleaning streets and roadside drains&below Tongariro?

It could be on the cards, if the public listen to the Sensible Sentencing Trust.

At a recent public meeting called by Taupo Mayor Rick Cooper, the SST threw up the idea of American-style inmate tent prisons and chain gangs to deal with what Mr Cooper says is a rising youth crime wave sweeping through the middle of the North Island.

Is New Zealand ready for this method of punishing youth who break the law?

Shane talks with Sheriff Joe Arpaio via satellite link from Phoenix, Arizona, the man who has made tent prisons and chain gangs a reality in his Arizona patch of Maricopa County.

And later in our Auckland studios Shane discusses the New Zealand response to the idea with Garth McVicar from the Sensible Sentencing Trust, NZ First Law & Order spokesman Ron Mark and Maori Party Law & Order Spokesman Pita Sharples.
